The poverty line is lower and uses another income

Poverty is measured on disposable income: what remains after taxes, social contributions and health insurance premiums. The BFS poverty line follows the SKOS social-assistance guidelines: basic needs, housing costs and a fixed amount for further expenses. Health insurance premiums are not part of the line because they are already deducted from income.

The middle-income limits (HABE, gross income) and the poverty line (SILC, disposable income) come from different surveys and income concepts. Do not subtract one from the other or read the gap as a spending budget.

How many people live below the poverty line?

8.4% of the population (95% interval ± 0.6 points), about 743 000 people, lived in households below the poverty line. Survey SILC 2024; the incomes refer to 2023.

The poverty rate counts income only, not savings or other assets. People aged 65 and over can more often draw on assets.

Children are all persons aged 0 to 24 who live with at least one parent. For couples, the age refers to the oldest person.
